Overview

More Than Just Plants

Great landscaping is about creating usable outdoor space—for family time, entertaining, or simply enjoying your property. We combine hardscape and softscape into cohesive designs.

What We Offer

  • Complete backyard makeovers

  • Front yard refreshes and curb appeal

  • Patios, walkways, and outdoor living areas

  • Retaining walls and grade changes

  • Plantings, gardens, and softscape

  • Outdoor lighting and irrigation

  • Drainage solutions and grading

What does Buildoreno's landscaping service include?

Buildoreno handles full-scope residential landscaping across the GTA: hardscape (patios, walkways, retaining walls, interlocking driveways), softscape (plantings, gardens, sod, mulch), drainage and grading, outdoor lighting, and irrigation. We design and build in-house — no subcontracted designers, no separate hardscape and softscape crews handing off mid-project.

Most homeowners come to us with a backyard that doesn't quite work — uneven grade, a patio that's outgrown the family, planters that have gone wild, or a brand-new build with a blank canvas. We treat every landscape as one cohesive design rather than a stack of services. The patio sizing accounts for the dining table you actually use. The retaining wall doubles as additional seating. The plantings include lower-maintenance native species so you're not redesigning in five years.

Across the GTA we work in every common project shape: small front-yard refreshes, mid-size backyard makeovers, and complete property overhauls including grading, drainage, structural retaining walls, and outdoor living. We also handle permit-required work like driveway-widening and interlock installations that exceed municipal coverage limits.

  • Interlocking paver patios, walkways, and driveways
  • Natural stone work — flagstone, armour stone, dry-stack walls
  • Retaining walls (engineered for height >3 ft per Ontario Building Code)
  • Garden design, sod installation, and softscape
  • Drainage and grading solutions (French drains, swales, sump discharge)
  • Outdoor lighting (low-voltage LED systems)
  • Irrigation and smart controllers

How much does landscaping cost in Toronto and the GTA?

Landscaping costs in Toronto and the GTA typically range from $5,000 for a small patio or walkway to $80,000+ for a complete backyard makeover with hardscape, softscape, lighting, and drainage. A mid-size backyard renovation (800–1,200 sq ft with patio, plantings, and lighting) usually lands between $25,000 and $45,000.

Prices vary significantly with site access, grade changes, material selection (concrete pavers vs. natural stone vs. premium imports), and whether the project requires permits, retaining structures, or drainage corrections. Tight-access urban properties — older Toronto and Mississauga neighbourhoods with no side access — typically run 15–25% higher than suburban properties with truck access. See the table below for typical project scenarios across the GTA.

We provide free, no-obligation written estimates that itemize materials, labour, equipment, and permits — no hidden line items, no surprises. For pricing specific to your city, visit our Landscaping cost guide.

What is interlocking and is it worth installing in the GTA?

Interlocking is a paving system that uses individual concrete or stone pavers laid in a pattern over a compacted aggregate base, locked in place with polymeric sand. For GTA homeowners it's almost always worth it over poured concrete or asphalt — interlock survives the freeze-thaw cycle, allows individual pavers to be lifted and replaced if damaged, and delivers a higher-end look that lifts curb appeal and resale value.

Interlocking is the GTA's most-installed hardscape because of how our winters behave. Asphalt cracks and heaves. Poured concrete cracks at every joint. Properly-installed interlock flexes with the freeze-thaw cycle, drains better than slab concrete, and any settling can be corrected paver-by-paver rather than ripped out and re-poured.

The base prep matters more than the paver. A correctly installed interlocking driveway in Toronto uses 8–12 inches of compacted ¾" clear stone, a layer of bedding sand, geotextile separation fabric over weak soils, and polymeric joint sand. Cutting corners on base depth is the #1 reason interlock projects fail within five years.

Typical use cases: front walkways, patios (sizes from 200 sq ft to 1,500 sq ft+), full driveways, pool decks, and steps. Most projects qualify for our 5-year hardscape warranty.

What's the difference between landscape design and hardscaping?

Landscape design is the planning step — site analysis, layout, material selection, plant choices, and how the spaces flow. Hardscaping is the construction of the non-living elements — patios, walls, walkways, driveways. Most successful GTA projects combine both: a strong design directing where hardscape, softscape, and circulation go, then the hardscape build that anchors the property for decades.

Some companies sell design separately and hand a drawing to the homeowner to find a builder. Others install hardscape with no design intent and your yard ends up with a patio that's too small and a walkway leading nowhere. Buildoreno keeps both under one roof — we design the space, then we build it. That means the design accounts for what we can actually build at your budget, and the build follows the design without value-engineering shortcuts.

Do I need a permit for landscaping in Toronto or the GTA?

Most decorative landscaping in the GTA doesn't require a permit — plantings, mulch, small patios under municipal coverage limits, and low retaining walls. Permits are typically required for retaining walls over 3 feet (Ontario Building Code), driveway widening beyond municipal limits, pool installations, grading changes near property lines, and any work in environmentally-protected areas including conservation authority lands and ravine zones.

Each GTA municipality applies these rules slightly differently. Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham, and Oakville each have their own driveway-widening bylaws and lot-coverage thresholds. We handle permits as part of our service and confirm permit requirements in writing before any work begins. If a permit isn't required, we say so — we don't pad scope.

For specific city pricing including permit fees, see our city-specific landscaping cost pages linked at the bottom of this page.

How long does a landscaping project take?

A small landscaping project (patio, walkway, or front-yard refresh) typically takes 3–7 days of on-site work. A mid-size backyard makeover with patio, plantings, lighting, and drainage takes 2–4 weeks. A complete property overhaul with engineered retaining walls, full softscape, and irrigation can take 4–8 weeks. Design and permit timelines are separate — usually 2–4 weeks before installation starts.

Total timeline depends on weather (we work April through November in the GTA, with hardscape extending into December in mild years), permit lead times, and material availability. We provide a written schedule with milestone dates as part of every estimate, and we send progress photos at every milestone so you know exactly where the project stands.

When is the best time of year to start a landscaping project in the GTA?

Late winter through early spring (February–April) is the best time to start planning a GTA landscaping project. Design, permits, and material orders happen during this window so installation can begin as soon as the ground thaws — typically late April. Booking in spring locks in the early-summer install slot before our calendar fills.

If you contact us in July hoping for an August install, expect to be scheduled for late September or October. Quality crews and material lead times don't stretch in peak season. Fall installations (September–November) are also strong — the ground is workable, plants establish before winter, and prices on some materials soften slightly.

FAQ

Landscaping Questions

Common questions about landscaping in the Greater Toronto Area.

Landscaping projects vary widely based on scope. A front yard refresh might start around $5,000–$15,000, while a complete backyard makeover with patio, plantings, and lighting typically ranges from $25,000–$75,000+. We provide detailed quotes after understanding your goals.

Both! We offer full design services where we create custom plans based on your goals and property. We can also work from existing plans if you've already worked with a landscape architect or have specific ideas you want executed.

It depends on the scope. Retaining walls over a certain height, decks, and structures typically require permits in most GTA municipalities. We handle all permit applications as part of our service and ensure everything is built to code.

Spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) are ideal for planting. However, hardscape work like patios and retaining walls can be done throughout the building season (April–November). We recommend booking early as schedules fill up quickly.

Proper drainage is built into every project. We assess your property's existing drainage patterns and incorporate solutions like French drains, swales, and proper grading to direct water away from your home and prevent pooling.

We focus on design and installation rather than ongoing maintenance. However, we provide detailed care instructions for all plantings and can recommend trusted maintenance partners if needed.

Interlocking is a paving system using individual concrete or stone pavers laid over a compacted aggregate base and locked with polymeric sand. In the GTA it almost always outperforms poured concrete or asphalt — it survives the freeze-thaw cycle, lets you lift and replace individual pavers if damaged, and significantly improves curb appeal and resale value. Most failures come from skimping on base depth, not from the pavers themselves.

We don't offer in-house financing, but every Buildoreno landscaping project runs on a milestone-based payment schedule under our Payment Protection Promise — $0 down at signing, with payments tied to completed milestones (design approval, site prep, hardscape complete, softscape complete, final walkthrough). You only pay for work that's been delivered.

Some work continues into winter — interlocking projects can run into December in mild years, and design work, permit applications, and material orders happen year-round. Once ground freezes, planting and excavation pause until thaw (typically late April). We use winter to plan and schedule so early-spring slots are locked in before peak season fills.

A landscape architect is licensed to stamp drawings for engineered work — large retaining structures, complex grading on commercial sites, or projects requiring formal land-use submissions. A landscape designer (or design-build firm like Buildoreno) handles residential design without the regulatory licensure — appropriate for the vast majority of GTA backyard and front-yard projects. We bring in licensed architects or engineers when a project requires stamped drawings.

Both. Front-yard work is a significant part of our calendar — driveway interlocking, walkways, planters, lighting, and curb-appeal refreshes consistently deliver some of the strongest return on investment for homeowners. We don't treat front yards as smaller projects — they get the same design attention as full backyard makeovers.

Yes. Tree protection is built into our site prep on every project — protective fencing around critical root zones, plywood paths for equipment routes, and careful excavation around mature plantings. If your project involves any work near protected trees (Toronto's private tree bylaw covers trees 30 cm DBH and larger), we handle the tree-protection permit and any required arborist sign-off.

No. Most clients work full-time and check in via the daily photo updates and milestone messages we send. We'll need access on day one and at milestone checkpoints, but otherwise we run the project without disrupting your schedule. For projects with interior coordination (e.g., basement walkout integration), we'll schedule those days together in advance.
