Composite & Wood Deck Construction in the GTA
Code-compliant decks in pressure-treated, cedar, and Trex/TimberTech composite — permits and footings done right.
Deck construction in the GTA is one of the most permit-heavy and code-regulated landscape projects, and the rules apply to everyone — even small homeowner-built decks. Under Ontario Building Code, a deck permit is required for any deck where the walking surface is more than 24 inches (610mm) above grade at any point. For decks at or below that height, a permit isn't usually required but the structural requirements still apply. The deck-permit process involves stamped structural drawings, footing inspection, framing inspection, and final inspection — and your inspector will pay attention to footing depth (must be 1.2 metres / 48 inches below grade in the GTA), guard height (42 inches above deck surface when deck is more than 6 feet above grade), guard opening (cannot allow passage of a 4-inch sphere), handrail height (34-38 inches on stairs with more than 3 risers), and joist sizing. Material choice drives the long-term cost. Pressure-treated wood is cheapest upfront ($25-$40 per square foot installed) but requires sealing every 2-3 years and typically needs board replacement at year 15-20. Cedar ($40-$60) is more attractive but similar lifespan. Composite (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon) at $55-$95 per square foot is the highest upfront cost but is essentially maintenance-free with 25-30 year warranties, which makes it the most economical choice over a 30-year hold period for most GTA homeowners. Buildoreno builds decks across Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Oakville, and Markham, handling permit applications, engineering coordination, footings to code, and all framing to Ontario Building Code requirements. Whether you want a simple ground-level cedar platform off the back door or a multi-level Trex Transcend deck with built-in lighting and pergola, the build process is the same: permit-first, footings-to-code, and engineered framing that's signed off by the inspector before any decking goes down.
Why Choose Buildoreno for Composite & Wood Deck Construction in the GTA
Permits handled — decks over 24 inches off grade require building permit under Ontario Building Code
Footings to 1.2 m frost depth prevent the heaving that lifts and tilts shallow-set decks
Code-compliant guards (42" high) and handrails (34-38") on stairs over 3 risers
Composite decking (Trex, TimberTech) carries 25-30 year warranty, essentially maintenance-free
Pressure-treated, cedar, and composite options matched to budget and 30-year cost-of-ownership
Engineered framing — joist sizing and span calculated per OBC tables for your design load
How We Work
Design, Permits & Engineering
We develop the deck design with you, prepare structural drawings, and submit for building permit. Engineering review confirms joist sizing, post spacing, and beam capacity. Pool-side decks may need additional fall-protection review.
Footings
Footings are dug or augered to 1.2 metres (48 inches) below grade — past frost line — and either poured concrete with sonotubes or proprietary helical screw piles. Footing inspection is scheduled before any framing begins.
Posts, Beams & Joists
Posts are set on the footings with proper hardware connections. Beams are sized to span tables per OBC, and floor joists are installed at 12 or 16 inch on-centre depending on deck-board span requirements. Framing inspection follows.
Decking, Guards & Stairs
Composite, cedar, or pressure-treated decking is fastened with hidden clips (composite) or stainless deck screws (wood). Guard rails are installed to code height with proper baluster spacing. Stairs are built to OBC rise/run with handrails over 3 risers.
Final Inspection & Finishing
We schedule the final municipal inspection. Wood decks are sealed (or left to weather based on owner preference). Lighting, pergolas, and built-in seating are installed if part of the design. The site is cleaned and walked through with you.
Typical Cost Range
Pressure-treated $25–$40/sq ft; cedar $40–$60/sq ft; composite (Trex/TimberTech) $55–$95/sq ft installed

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes if the deck walking surface is more than 24 inches (610mm) above grade at any point. The permit involves stamped drawings, footing inspection, framing inspection, and final inspection. We handle the permit process for every deck project that requires it.
For most GTA homeowners staying in their homes 10+ years, yes. Composite costs roughly 2x pressure-treated upfront but eliminates the staining and sealing maintenance ($800-$1,500 every 2-3 years for a typical deck) and lasts 25-30 years vs 15-20 for wood. Total 30-year cost is usually lower for composite.
Deck footings in the GTA must reach 1.2 metres (48 inches) below grade — past the local frost line. Shallower footings will heave with every freeze-thaw cycle, lifting posts and twisting the deck. This requirement is code; inspectors will fail any deck where footings aren't to depth.
Quality composite decking (Trex Transcend, TimberTech AZEK, Fiberon Sanctuary) carries 25-30 year residential warranties and typically lasts the full warranty period in the GTA climate. The framing underneath (still pressure-treated wood in most cases) lasts 25-40 years.
Trex (especially Transcend and Enhance lines) is the most installed composite in the GTA market, followed by TimberTech AZEK. Both offer multiple colours, hidden fastener systems, and matching railing components. We typically quote both and let homeowners choose based on colour preference and budget.
