Premium synthetic grass that stays green year-round without water, pesticides, or mowing.
Artificial turf has shifted from a novelty to a practical choice for many GTA properties, especially in spots where natural grass routinely fails: deep shade under mature maples, dog-run areas, narrow side yards, and rooftop terraces in condo conversions. A properly installed turf lawn lasts roughly 20-25 years in our climate compared to the 5-10 year lifespan of natural grass in challenging Toronto conditions like dense shade or heavy pet traffic. The catch is that performance depends almost entirely on the drainage base beneath the turf, not the turf product itself — and this is where most cheap installs fail within two seasons. Toronto's freeze-thaw cycles will heave a poorly compacted base, creating waves and seams; clay subsoil traps water that turns into ice lenses; and inadequate edge restraint allows shifting that pulls seams apart. Buildoreno installs artificial turf across Toronto, Etobicoke, Scarborough, Vaughan, and Oakville using a 4-6 inch compacted limestone screening base, geotextile separation fabric over the clay subsoil, and seamless infill systems. We offer pet-friendly cool turf (with antimicrobial infill and faster drainage rates of 30+ inches per hour) and standard landscape turf in pile heights from 30mm to 50mm. Whether you're tired of struggling with grass under a mature tree, designing a low-maintenance backyard for a busy household, or surfacing a rooftop deck, turf eliminates watering, mowing, fertilizing, and pesticide use — which also means it meets Toronto's cosmetic pesticide ban without compromise.

We assess shade levels, drainage patterns, pet usage, and intended use. Together we select pile height, density, and infill type — pet-friendly cool-turf with antimicrobial infill costs more but drains faster and stays cooler.
We excavate 5-7 inches of existing soil and lay a geotextile fabric over the clay subsoil to prevent base contamination. A 4-6 inch base of compacted limestone screenings provides drainage and stability through freeze-thaw cycles.
Bender board or aluminum edging is installed at borders to prevent the base from migrating. Turf rolls are laid out with seams planned away from main sight lines and aligned with the grain (yes, turf has a grain) facing the primary view.
Seams are joined with seam tape and adhesive, then nailed every 6 inches around the perimeter with 5-6 inch galvanized landscape nails. Cuts around obstacles are made with precision to avoid visible seams.
Silica sand or antimicrobial infill is brushed into the turf fibers — typically 1-2 lbs per square foot. This weighted infill keeps the turf flat, fibers upright, and gives the lawn its natural feel underfoot.

It's worth it in three scenarios: dense shade where natural grass fails, high-traffic dog yards, and busy households that don't want lawn maintenance. The 20-25 year lifespan offsets the upfront cost. For sunny well-drained yards with no pets, natural sod is usually the better economic choice.
Standard turf can reach 50-65°C on hot July afternoons. Cool-turf products with infrared-reflective fibers stay 10-15°C cooler. For backyards where kids and pets use the lawn, we recommend cool-turf or planning shade structures over high-use areas.
Solid waste is picked up like normal grass. Urine drains through the turf and the limestone base. Pet-friendly antimicrobial infill (typically T°Cool or ZeoFill) prevents odor buildup. Most homeowners rinse the turf weekly with a garden hose during heavy pet use periods.
No. Snow and ice do not harm artificial turf. Avoid using metal shovels (use plastic) and never use ice-melt salt — salt residue ruins the infill and can degrade the fibers. Allow snow to melt naturally or sweep it off.
No municipal permit is required for residential turf installation in most GTA cities. However, some condo boards and HOAs restrict its use, and front yard installations should comply with municipal landscaping bylaws that require permeable surfaces. We confirm requirements with your municipality before installation.
