Metal Shingle Roofing for Toronto & GTA Homes

The look of traditional shingles with the strength and longevity of metal.

The overview

Metal shingles offer GTA homeowners the best of both worlds — the classic appearance of traditional roofing materials with the strength, longevity, and low maintenance of metal. Designed to replicate the look of cedar shakes, slate tiles, or architectural asphalt shingles, metal shingles are virtually indistinguishable from their traditional counterparts while lasting three to four times longer. This makes them an ideal choice for Toronto neighbourhoods with architectural guidelines, heritage districts, or homeowners who want metal performance without a modern industrial aesthetic. Each shingle interlocks with its neighbours, creating a wind-resistant system rated for gusts up to 190 km/h — well beyond what GTA storms typically deliver. They weigh roughly one-third of traditional materials, reducing structural load on older homes common throughout Toronto, Mississauga, and Hamilton. Buildoreno installs steel and aluminum metal shingles from leading manufacturers, with stone-coated and painted finish options to match any architectural style.

How we do it

Our process, step by step

  1. 1
    Consultation & Style Selection

We help you choose between stone-coated steel, painted aluminum, and various profiles (shake, slate, shingle). We bring samples to your home so you can see them against your siding.

  2. 2
    Tear-Off & Deck Inspection

Remove existing roofing material, inspect and repair sheathing as needed. For older Toronto homes, we often find areas requiring new plywood before proceeding.

  3. 3
    Underlayment & Starter Installation

Apply ice and water shield in critical areas and synthetic underlayment across the deck. Install starter strips and drip edge along eaves and rakes.

  4. 4
    Shingle Installation

Each metal shingle is installed from the eave up, interlocking with adjacent shingles. Custom cutting around penetrations, valleys, and hip ridges ensures a watertight fit.

  5. 5
    Ridge Cap & Final Details

Ventilated ridge caps are installed for proper attic airflow. All trim, flashing, and transition pieces are completed and inspected.

Honest answers

Metal Shingle Roofing questions, answered

Yes — modern metal shingles are remarkably realistic. Stone-coated steel shingles have textured surfaces that closely mimic natural materials. From street level, most people cannot tell the difference between metal shingles and their traditional counterparts.

Metal shingles are often the best option for heritage homes in Toronto. They replicate traditional aesthetics while being significantly lighter — an important consideration for older structures. Many heritage conservation boards accept metal shingle applications.

Metal shingles are rated Class 4 for impact resistance (the highest rating). They withstand hail up to 2 inches in diameter without damage, unlike asphalt shingles which can lose granules and crack from the same impact.

Yes, with care. Metal shingles are more walkable than standing seam panels. We recommend soft-soled shoes and stepping on the lower portion of each shingle where it's fully supported. We can also install snow guards to assist with roof access.
